Exploring the role of green building education in advancing smart city goals

As African cities grapple with rapid urbanisation and environmental challenges, the concept of smart cities offers a promising pathway towards sustainability and resilience. Central to this transition is the integration of green building principles, which emphasize energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, and sustainable living. However, achieving these goals requires a wellinformed workforce and citizenry equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills. This paper explores the critical role of green building education in advancing smart city initiatives, particularly within the African context. It highlights how embedding sustainability curricula in higher education, professional training, and community outreach can foster innovation, promote green entrepreneurship, and accelerate the development of inclusive smart urban spaces. Drawing on case studies and best practices, the study discusses the synergies between education, green building technologies and smart city frameworks. It concludes by proposing strategic recommendations for policymakers, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders to strengthen green building education as a catalyst for Africa sustainable urban future. This aligns with ICESDA’s 2025 focus on integrating ESG and sustainability practices to drive Africa’s green transition efforts.
