Green Gold in Ghana: Harnessing the prospects and managing the challenges in the usage of bio-based bamboo Technology in Ghana

Conventional construction methods have traditionally resulted in high energy consumption and have gradually led to the depletion ] of natural resources, thereby precipitating the need to rethink sustainability. Bio-based construction materials derived from renewable biological sources, including plants, agricultural byproducts, and natural fibres, are known to address environmental conservation challenges while promoting global sustainability. This research examines the perception and barriers to the adoption of bio-based materials in the Ghanaian construction industry and proposes strategies to enhance their acceptance among stakeholders. As a quantitative-based study, questionnaires were distributed to 122 stakeholders in the built environment, receiving a response rate of 78%. The survey revealed that while 65% of built environment professionals were aware of the use of bio-based construction materials, only 31% of respondents had, in their professional practice, designed or used bio-based construction materials. The survey further established that notable barriers to the deployment of bio-based construction materials are growing concerns about structural integrity, slow adaptation of green building technologies, lack of technical skills and innovation in the use of bio-based construction materials, limited longevity in harsh climates, lack of awareness of bio-based materials and perceived cultural preferences and status symbolism. To enhance rapid assimilation and adoption, there may be a need for capacity building among building professionals, creation of public awareness, research and innovation to produce more durable and aesthetically pleasing products, and promotion of community-based demonstration projects. While promoting the use of bio-based construction materials would go a long way toward promoting sustainability, it has the potential to create a circular economy, generate new jobs, and reduce the country’s dependence on imported materials.
